MYRIAD - action learning sets in arts and health

Blank space holder

Since May 2024, Saif Ali and I have co-delivered a set of Action Learning Sets (ALSs) as part of a project called MYRIAD, a health initiative that aims to increase the range of mental health support available to global majority communities in Greater Manchester.

The ALSs offered a carefully facilitated space for leaders of creative arts organisations who work with global majority groups to find peer support and guidance, where they examine their challenges and help each other find practical ways to navigate them. These small-group sessions offered the participants the chance to address important issues, often for the first time, and develop supportive networks amongst themselves and beyond.

We had a core group of three participants - Cartwheel Arts (Hebe Reilly), Sheba Arts (Fereshteh Mozaffari) and a third participant, an independent textiles artist Michelle Ayavoro.

We noted that a strong, trusting and inclusive environment was quickly established. There was an impressive level of openness and sharing of challenges by all, in a respectful, confidential atmosphere.

Michelle found the sessions ‘transformative’ as she explored the different strands of her artistic activities and considered ways to focus on a step-by-step approach to developing her brand. In one of the later sessions, she brought an example of an item she was preparing for an upcoming exhibition, which completely wowed everyone!

The CEOs bravely examined personal and professional challenges with transparent frankness. The structured questioning allowed them to unlock some aspects they had not thought about.

Since it was a small group, as facilitators, we introduced some flexibility into the structure. We first established that it would be welcomed by all and it was. This was a highly rewarding experience for Saif and myself, as the participants truly engaged in such an active way.

Without any prompts and in the last session they all wanted to continue meeting without facilitation. This was a great sign that the ALS work had helped the group to develop a strong identity and independence. At the time of writing, we know that they have set the first date in their diaries.

We shall no doubt keep in touch with them to hear about their progress.

We are what we do and we love what we do.
